Alfred W. Barkowsky, age 88, of Norwich, formerly of Stonington, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Backus Hospital in Norwich. He was born in Mystic on November 29, 1924, the son of George E. and Dorothea (Burbach) Barkowsky. He married Ruth L. Brown on July 28, 1946. She predeceased him in 1983. Every since he was a young boy he loved boating and racing up and down the Mystic River. His incredible enthusiasm for Model A Fords, which was his first car, led to his lifelong collection of Model Classic antique cars. He loved working in his yard and garage and all the family backyard picnics. He belonged to Senior Center groups from Old Lyme to Westerly in which he did much of his traveling. He loved Big Band music. He worked for 34 years at Pfizer, retiring in 1985 as a chemical production manager. Alfred is survived by his daughter Bonnie and her husband Kenneth Y. Merchant of Griswold and a sister Catherine Barkowsky of Mystic. He is predeceased by his brother George Barkowsky and his sister Dorothea Singer. Visitation will be on Thursday from 10 to 11am at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic followed by a funeral service at 11am.
